MSVU Fights Cancer with Relay for Life!
date: Saturday, January 9, 2010 8:48 AM
Recently students from MSVU, SMU and DAL came together with a common goal: to organize the very first Metro University Canadian Cancer Relay for Life. Now that goal is a reality as the very first cross University Relay will take place this March.
The Relay’s are a special and unique event, bringing people together from all areas of life to honor, support and remember those who have survived Cancer and those who have not.
The Relay itself (run, walk, or stroll) is a 12-hour overnight, non-competitive event. Teams of 10 to 15 form a Relay For Life team. On Relay For Life night, participants create team camps which can include tents which may be decorated in their particular theme. The tent serves as the team’s headquarters. Each participant pays a registration fee.
Cancer survivors are introduced during the Opening Ceremony and are invited to begin the event by walking the first lap, the Survivors’ Victory Lap, around the track. This is a declaration to the community that we are celebrating cancer survivorship.
Once the Survivors’ Victory Lap is completed, all other Relay For Life participants join in. Each team has one representative on the track at all times throughout the event.
At dusk, a Luminary Ceremony is held. Candles line the track and are lit in honour of those who have survived and to remember those who lost their battle with cancer. The candles remain lit through the night.
Throughout the evening participants will enjoy a variety of live entertainment. You may even be able to catch a few winks!
Near the end of the event the powerful Fight Back Ceremony is held where everyone who wants to put an end to this disease makes a personal commitment to fight back.
This event has happened over the past two years at both Acadia and St. FX and now it’s our turn in Metro to join the battle. But to do it we need your help! We are calling for interested students, co-workers, departments, residence floors, societies and faculty members to come together and create teams to be part of this tremendous event. Register your team or just yourself and join an existing team, but get involved.
To register, go online to:
http://convio.cancer.ca/site/TR?fr_id=6960&pg=entry
Follow the “Register for Relay” link to create your team. The person who registers a new team automatically will be labeled your team captain. Once you have established and registered your team and team captain, the rest of your team members need only follow the same link to join your team.
MSVU has an established group of committee members as part of the overall organizing committee. Please feel free to contact them for any help or to answer any questions.
We hope you will join us on Friday, March 19th, 2010 at the Dal Plex from 7pm until 7am as teams from MSVU, SMU and DAL join together in the fight against cancer.

Rosaria Renovations
date: Saturday, December 12, 2009 8:33 AM
The Rosaria Student Centre has long served as the hub of student life on the MSVU campus. Well now it is about to begin an ongoing facelift that will excite students and community alike.
Initial plans begin during the Holiday break as Vinnie's Pub gets some new light in the form of additional interior windows as well as a new sound and light system. Additionally, the Rosaria Lobby will also be receiving a new sound system to bring back music and announcements. Following this, the interior service end of Rosaria containing the hallways into and including the Crows Nest will see new colors and design on their walls. In the Crows Nest and Rosaria Lobby, new furniture will eventually arrive as well as the installation of a new trophy case.
Further renovations include a major renovation to Vinnie's Pub bar with new furniture, more color and aesthetic changes to the Rosaria lobby and the creation of a new Students' Union board room. The changes are not limited to Rosaria however. Already changes have been happening in the Seton Link and Lobby, with further upgrades planned for these spaces as well. The march towards a brand new campus is underway and it is an exciting time at MSVU.
The Rosaria Reno is a joint project between MSVU and the Students' Union and we look forward to your feedback and comments.
